Training session on organic vegetable farming conducted in Cherpu

A training session on organic vegetable farming was conducted by Pesticide Action Network (PAN) India in Cherpu Panchayat, Thrissur. The session was conducted at the Cherpu Panchayat Hall for Kudumbasree members of Cherpu Block. It was conducted on behalf of the activities of Chenam Agroecology Project and focuses on the capacity building of farmers.
Chenam Agroecology Project implemented by PAN India aims to advance agroecological transition in food production, processing and marketing in Chenam Kole wetland in Thrissur District, Kerala. This project is intended to bring together various players in the Kole farming systems to address the adverse effects of agrochemical-dependent farming practices on health and environmental well-being. It also tries to identify solutions and remedial measures to correct the wrong doings that happened in the past years and prioritize agroecology.
The project was launched on 16 th October 2023 at Panchayat hall, Cherpu. Sujisha Kalliyath, Panchayath president of Cherpu inaugurated the launching ceremony. Since then, field assessment of current farming practices, biodiversity monitoring, and capacity building programs are being organized form farmers. The project helps to build the capacity of the farming community and local stakeholders to address the identified problems and challenges in adopting agroecology through informed decision-making. PAN India is conducting activities such as field studies, sensitization programmes and capacity building programmes as part of the project. And is trying to develop a trained youth and women team to enable agroecology transition in Kole wetlands.
The training session conducted at Cherpu was aimed to educate and empower women farmers on the benefits and methods of organic vegetable farming. Cherpu Grama Panchayat president, Sujisha Kalliyath inaugurated the programme. “The fact that even the food we eat these days is unsafe is something we ignore. Therefore, it is our duty to guarantee that the food our children eat is safe. Small actions we take in our homes might add up to a big step in the right direction.” Said Sujisha .

Retired Joint Assistant Director of Agriculture V S Roy led the session. He suggested various effective methods that can be adopted in the households at low cost. And discussed different farming practices to be followed and concerns raised by the participants.
“ A gradual switch from chemical-based farming methods to non chemical farming methods is required as we are getting more affected by the harmful effects of pesticides in our day to day life. People should be more aware of the practices and capable of implementing them on their own farmlands.” Said Roy. The programme was attended by 230 Kudumbasree members who were interested in initiating organic farming in their lands.
