Pesticide Action Network (PAN) India stand with the people, the district administration and Government of Kerala amidst the massive landslides that happened in the Mundakai and Chooralmala villages in Wayanad district, in the southern Indian state of Kerala.  Within a few hours in the early morning of the 30th of July, three massive landslides hit these areas, literally wiping out lives and livelihoods.

These villages, located in the slopes and valleys of an undulating hilly region that is part of the ecologically fragile Western Ghats. It has been raining heavily in the region, which increased instability of the fragile system.  Thick rocky pieces, mud and huge amounts of water washed almost the entire downstream that wiped houses, buildings and trees.

As of today this unfortunate incident has claimed the lives of more than 300 villagers who were primarily involved in agriculture related activities, including migrant workers. Several hundreds have become injured and hundreds of natives and workers are missing.

The entire machinery of government of Kerala and the Wayanad district administration, teams of police and fire department, army services, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and voluntary organizations and individuals have been engaged in rescue operations and disaster relief activities.

PAN India team and supporters are looking forward to joining hands with Wayanad district administration, district Panchayat and local self-government towards post disaster rehabilitation efforts.
